It's the end of the month, and as promised, we've got one more youth spotlight to showcase! So without further ado, we proudly present Destiny Wilby, a young singer-songwriter and poet.

It is Destiny's first official year with Just TV and although the pandemic has presented many obstacles, she has demonstrated so much dedication to the program writing consistently, connecting with peers and showing up for performances and regular program nights.

Get to know her more and read on:

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Destiny, I am a singer song writer, but I also like to write poetry. I started singing when I was about 10-11. I remember the exact moment I realize I could sing was when I was with an old friend of mine, we were singing Let It Go from frozen, and I had hit a note so nicely, and we had both looked at each other with so much amazement. From then on I loved singing. Though my whole life my dad has influenced me with music. I’ve also been writer since I was 9, I use to write books and always said I wanted to be an author. I didn’t start writing songs until my first year of high school and it wasn’t until I was in grade 11 that I started to really love poetry.

Tell is about your influences and interests!

My interests, other than music are basketball and modelling. I love taking photos of myself and love when others take photos of me. Sounds conceited but it’s true. I am not a model but it’s something I’d like to get into.

My influences in music are artists like, Summer Walker, Jhene Aiko, Giveon, Drake, Khelani, and Tate McRae.

How did you hear about Just TV? What do you do at Just TV?

The first time I had heard and was involved in Just TV, was when I had gotten my first job at WASAC. Our whole second week was spent at JustTv. I knew from when I read it on the email I was sent, that this place was going to be my place. This year was my first official year involved with Just TV.

At Just TV we did so much, such as, learn how to produce music on apps like garage band. We learnt how to make and edit videos and also we learnt about how we could create our own “Brand”. Basically meaning, how we wanted to present ourselves as a performer and our genre of music.

Where do you get inspiration to create?

All my inspirations come from real experiences I’ve had. When I’m in my most emotional state I seem to write most vulnerable and create my best songs. Also, music in its self makes me inspired. Like listening to beats or instrumentals. Sometimes I can sit down put on a beat and let my pen take over.

What are you working on at Just TV?

My latest project is my first ever music video, with my song ‘Pretend’. A song I wrote about how I’m pretending to be over someone to avoid the true feelings.

What are your future dreams as an artist?

My hopes and aspirations for myself in the future would be, being able to collaborate a lot more with others. I’d also like to create a lot more music that fuels my soul, that I’m excited to share with others.
